In 2014 Americans spent $12.5 billion, which represents a 4% drop from 2013, when Father’s day spending reached a record $13 billion. Over the past 11 years, Father’s day sales in the U.S. averaged about $10.3 billion and have grown by 56%, from $8 billion in 2004 to $12.5 billion in 2014.

It clearly shows that young adults, and particularly the 25 to 34 year-olds, are a key demographic as they planned to spend an average of $162 on gifts for dad in 2014, which is more than double the average amount adults 65 and older planned to spend ($72). 35 to 44 year olds come in second place, with an average spend of $134.

Unsurprisingly, dads look to be the primary beneficiaries of presents made during Father’s day in 2015, with 52% of survey participants saying they plan to buy gifts for their father or stepfather, while more than 1 in 4 said they will buy presents for their husband. 9 percent expect to shop for their son and only 4 percent for their grandfather.
