The chart above is based on results of a survey among adult Americans regarding how much money they planned to spend on Mother’s day shopping. In 2015, the average person was expected to shell out $173, which is the highest ever recorded and a $10 increase from 2014, when the average American spent about $163 on mother’s day gifts. Notice however, that online shoppers on average were anticipated to spend close to 50 percent more than brick and mortar shoppers ($252 vs $173 in 2015).

Average Mothers Day Spending per Person (by Age Group) | Fundivo

It clearly shows that young adults, and particularly the 25 to 34 year-olds, are a key demographic as they planned to spend an average of $244 on gifts for mom in 2015, which is nearly double the average amount adults 65 and older were looking to spend ($121). 18 to 24 year olds come in second place, with an average spend of $215; followed closely by 35 to 44 year olds ($186).

Unsurprisingly, moms were the primary beneficiaries of presents made during Mother’s day in 2015, with two thirds of survey participants saying they planned to shop for their mother or stepmother, while nearly 1 in 4 saying they were planning to buy presents for their wife. 1 in 10 bought gifts for their daughter and 7 percent for their grandmother.
