The bar chart above shows what items Valentine’s day shoppers in the United States planned to purchase in 2016, and is based on a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation.

Jewelery takes first place with nearly $5 billion being spent on necklaces, rings, and other personal ornaments. Spending on romantic dinners and evenings out was expected to reach $3.6 billion, while flowers came in 3rd place with $2.1 billion, nearly tied with clothing ($2 billion).

Chocolate hearts other Candy sales came in 5th place at $1.7 billion. Americans also planned to spend $1.2 billion on gift cards and $1 billion on greeting cards.

The chart above is based on results of a survey among adult Americans regarding how much money they plan to spend on Valentine’s Day gifts.

In 2016, the average valentine’s gift giver expected to spend $142, slightly higher than the previous year’s average spend of $134, and well above the average $109 of the past 15 years. In Addition, men planned to spend $190 on valentine’s day gift, which is practically double the amount that women said they would spend ($96).

The chart above shows you where Americans spent their money during Valentine’s day 2016. Specialty Stores (35%) and Department stores (34%) were by far the most popular shopping destinations.

Online shopping has also increased in 2016, with 1 in 4 Americans buying their valentine’s day gifts online. Specialty stores came in 4th place, having been frequented by about 23% of shoppers; followed by Florists (19%).

Valentine’s day gift givers also visited Jewelry stores (10%), Specialty clothing stores (7%) and used catalogs (2%) to buy gifts.
